Part 1

“I’m full of so much gratitude right now. And I do not feel elevated above any of my fellow nominees or anyone in this room because we share the same love, the love of film and this form of expression has given me the most extraordinary life. elevate就是我们常说的电梯elevator的动词，本身表示上升，elevate经常和escalate作为一对同义词。这里面用feel elevated above说的就是感觉高人一等的意思，虽然夺得了最佳男主，但是他并不觉得比任何在做的高人一定，因为在做的每一位都有着对于电影纯纯的爱。

🌰 champion different cause

champion在GRE考试中基本是不考察冠军这个名词的，这已经是老生常谈了。champion在这里表示支持的意思（support / defend），在原句中大家也不要忽视，作者用了feel or are made to feel，这个被动语态用得非常的好，体现出这个世界在分裂我们，我们不知不觉的被人操控的感觉。这不仅让我想起了一个GRE的句子，那就是，我们总以为我们和别人不同，但其实我们的生活大抵相似，你还能记得是哪道题目吗？欢迎GRE铁粉留言把这句话找出来。

🌰 with impunity

impunity其实在老GRE考试中就出现过，这个单词表示免于受罚，im否定前缀，pun可以让你想到punish，所以就是不用罚了就是免于受罚。我们总认为有一些人，一些民族，一个性别，一个种族有权利主导别人、剥削利用别人却免于受罚。

用在自己的作文和口语中都是既简单又有格调的短语，总比你说we are far from强多了把。

🌰plunder - 掠夺

And then we take her milk that’s intended for her calf and we put it in our coffee and our cereal. And I think we fear the idea of personal change because we feel we have to sacrifice something, to give something up. But human beings, at our best, are so inventive and creative and ingenious. And I think that when we use love and compassion as our guiding principles, we can create, develop and implement systems of change that are beneficial to all sentient beings and to the environment.

🌰 entitle - 赋予权力

当人们有了一个title（头衔），那就是相当于汉语说的“名正言顺”，所以我更愿意把feel entitled to do 翻译成名正言顺做某事。

这里要补充一下，他是一个保护动物的activist，也是一个严格素食主义者（vegan）。所以才会有上述的体会。

Part 4

Now, I have been a scoundrel in my life. I’ve been selfish. I’ve been cruel at times. Hard to work with. And I am grateful that so many of you in this room have given me a second chance. And I think that’s when we’re at our best when we support each other, not when we cancel each other out for past mistakes but when we help each other to grow, when we educate each other, when we guide each other toward redemption. That is the best of humanity.

这个单词和villain差不多，别忘了他演的joker就是一个scoundrel。

🌰 cancel each other out 相互抵消

cancel会用，但是cancel out就未必了。这就是小词大用处的魅力。cancel each other out表示相互抵消。这里他想表达的是过去我得罪你，你得罪我，我们就相互扯平了，人和人之间不是以牙还牙，以眼还眼，而是相互帮助，共同赎罪。
