The positioning of an adverbial clause in a sentence has been well researched in native speakers’ writing production. However, little attention is being paid to nonnative speakers. Drawing on a corpus of Chinese students’ TOEFL essays, this study examines the factors that affect the position of concessive adverbial clauses headed by although in their writings. Results show that factors that influence native speakers’ decision of placing an adverbial clause in previous studies do not influence Chinese students in the same way. Based on the findings, several teaching implications are drawn.
